Small pocket pairs are usually considered 22 through to 66, there have been many debates on how poker players should approach playing small pocket pairs, here is our opinion.
You should always consider these factors before playing any small pocket pairs.
- Chip count - Your chip count and your opponents chip count should come into consideration, if the bet is small or you can potentially win a lot for hitting "trips" then maybe calling is an option
- Number of players in the hand - Let's say there's five players in the hand then you get excellent value to hit "trips"
- Don't raise - If other players limp-in before you and they have only called the blind then you should limp-in too, call a small raise but re-raising could get you into big trouble
- Position - If you are in late position and you raise then you must continue to raise and play strongly after the flop as your opponent will not know that you have missed your cards
There is a general sort of rule amongst most poker players that is know as "flop setting" or "setting flops" which basically means a player will call a small bet to the flop and unless they hit "trips" they will give up the hand and concede defeat for that hand.
Nearly all poker players have a different opinion on how to play small pocket pairs just remember to make the most of your call, meaning that you have favourable pot odds for that hand.
