poker strategy - cash game strategy

Here we would like to share some advice about cash games and it's strategy. We would like to help you become an even better poker player than you already are.

Cash games are often referred to, as the "bread and butter" of poker meaning the day to day top up of bankroll. Statistics show that in 2004 there was a staggering $60,000,000 wagered in cash game pots every single day, this figure has steadily been rising each year and it is predicted that somewhere between $100,000,000 and $200,000,000 is now wagered in cash game pots every single day and we want to help you get your share.

Now let's talk about cash games and some basic strategy

  • Blinds do Not go up so wait for a "monster" hand.
  • Only play "monster" hands like 10 10, Jack Jack, Queen Queen, King King and Ace Ace
  • Keep your raises consistent around 3-4 times the big blind.
  • Be aware of players trying to "steal"
  • Be aggressive in optimum situations.
  • Remember "it's better to make a bad fold than a bad call"
  • Observe and learn your opponents playing style and make notes.

Remember the blinds do NOT go up this means you can sit back, relax and wait for nice starting hands without losing lots of chips or by having the blinds go up forcing you to play hands that you would normally fold.

You have heard it before but only play the best hands like 10 10, JJ, QQ, KK, AA, AK, AQ the "monsters" many people end up calling mediocre hands like Q8 because of boredom, we strongly suggest to multi-table by playing 2,3,4 or more tables at once, this decreasing waiting time and boredom. (multi-tabling is a very good way to collect poker points towards your sponsorship trade-ins)

Do Not raise too much in a cash game, raising 3-4 times the big blind is adequate. Let's say you have A10 and you raise 3 times the big blind and some one re-raises you all-in, making the fold will be much easier compared to say if you had raised half of your entire stack or call where most times in that situation where you call you will be more than likely dominated and most often you will be up against AQ, AK or AA.

When you are in the big blind be aware of the "steal" this is where it has been folded round to the player near the dealer button or the last player to act before the blinds. If players do this to you then at some point you will need to make a stand because if you don't then every time you are the big blind you will lose it by the other players raising. Try re-raising in this position do NOT do it too often but doing this will make players think twice before raising your blinds.

Be aggressive in the right situations if you want to make money, you will need to know when to raise some people may disagree but when you have the very best hand possible "the nuts" you MUST always raise big. This is to firstly maximise your profits and secondly to protect your hand for example, if you have three of a kind on the flop and there's two cards of the same suit if you raise a small amount you will get called by the flush draw, if you raise big then it makes it a lot harder to call and if they do miss their flush then you will have maximised your profits.

One of the best sayings in poker that applies a lot to cash games is "it's better to make a bad fold than to make a bad call" meaning if you make a bad call you could lose your entire stack where as you make a bad fold and you will still have chips to carry on playing.

Observe and learn your opponents when sitting at your poker table, this is very important and we do stress on this point as you can learn a lot from your opponents. Watch for how much the average raises of each player are, what hands they have turned over at showdown to give you a "player range" and watch for players that keep folding. If you know a player has been folding regularly and then the player re-raises you then you will know you are up against a strong hand. We could talk forever on this subject but keep your eyes on the game and it's players. Making notes is a good way of knowing players.

Online poker cash games can be very profitable for good solid players that stick to a strategy, use what works for you. Players that can break even when playing cash games can also now make a profit from rake-back, rake-back is a portion of the money you pay to the house usually 30%. For every $1 of rake you pay you will receive $0.30 make sure you apply for rake-back when you join an online poker site.

The key is not to go bust and lose your bankroll, as obvious as it sounds you can lose all your chips in one hand. Try using some of the things you have learnt from reading this article and see if any of our advice helps you out at the tables.
